George was the fifth of eight children born to Eliza Smock and James Jewell. He married Eva Dittemore on 7 May 1921 and they had a son, Donald, and daughter Mary Ann. In addition to working in sales to support his family, George was an ordained Minister who preached for over fifty years.
A PERSONAL NOTE: For many years after their marriage, George and Eva lived across the alley from her parents in a close knit neighborhood just North of the Terre Haute city limits. I was born in that neighborhood and the Jewell family assisted my father by taken me into their care after our house burned to the ground in 1947. I lived with the Jewells for seven months and have very fond memories of their presence in my life. I still cherish a small bible given me by Reverend Jewell when I returned to the care of my father.
