Truman was a farmer in his early years but had to supplement his income to feed a growing family. As the advent of electricity was spreading to the homes and farms of Livingston County, he began work in that field. He was quick to learn the trade and eventually opened his own business, "Salem Electric", which continued to be his livelihood for many years until retirement.

AN ASIDE: I always enjoyed talking with Truman. He had a quick mind and could weave the facts about his life and family into an interesting story. I'm told that Truman was given the middle name of Boucher by his mother due to her respect for a local church gentleman known as "Brother Boucher". It was said that Truman despised the name, never acknowledged it, and became angry when the subject was raised. In deference to his living wishes, I've omitted his middle name on the memorial entry. And now..., as I've heard him conclude our conversations so many times before, "…., and so the story goes".
