Sheldon C. "Chuck" Shirley

TERRE HAUTE — Sheldon C. Shirley, 76, of Terre Haute, passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at 5 a.m. in Regional Hospital due to lung cancer with complications due to pneumonia. He was born in Terre Haute, Ind. Aug. 24, 1934, to Sheldon Shirley and Ruth (Pinkard) Shirley, and was a graduate of Garfield High School in 1952.

He served six years in the Naval Reserves, three years for McCullough Corporation in California, one year for Martin Missile Corporation, two years for Denver Telephone Service in Colorado, two years for Midland Glass, and 21 years for the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary where he retired in 1984. Chuck and his surviving wife Janice also held residence in Punta Gorda, Fla. where he worked part time for The Charlotte Sun in Port Charlotte, Fla. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, also serving as a trustee.

Chuck is survived by his wife Janice Thompson Shirley of 57 years, three children Jerrilyn Hedges and husband Stephen of Terre Haute, Chris Shirley Scott and Dan Cooper of Terre Haute, and Tim Shirley and wife Linda of Shelburn; eight grandchildren, Shawn Hedges, Cassondra Hedges, Jerrad Runkle, Mary Hickey, T.J. Shirley, Erik Shirley, Jasmine Scott, and Preston Scott and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Craig Shirley, and both parents.

Funeral services are 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. Pastor Rod Maris will be officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the funeral service at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Burial will be at Prairie Creek West Lawn Cemetery with military honors. If friends so desire, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Union Baptist Church Youth Group, 4075 E. Harlan Drive, Terre Haute, IN 47802 in memory of Chuck Shirley.
