Philip was born in Monoghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania. His parents moved with their children to Somerset County where he met and married his wife Mary Wright, daughter of Samuel and Hannah, on March 24, 1801. By 1805, he and Mary migrated to Fairfield (now Franklin) County, OH. The homeplace in Madison Township was bordered by Shannon and Brice Roads and was a little south of Blacklick Creek.
In politics, Philip was an old-line Whig. During the War of 1812, he served as a private in the 2nd Regiment of Ohio Militia, Capt. James Taylor's unit, under Col. Harrison. Mary later received a pension award of forty acres for his services.
In 1829, land near their farm was donated by the Kings for a school house to the trustees of Madison Township.
The following year, Mary purchased 80 acres in Van Wert County, Ohio, where their children later pioneered. Philip and Mary began selling their property in Franklin County in anticipation of a move, but, sadly, Philip passed away on their 45th wedding anniversary in 1846. Mary left the area and made a new home with the children in Van Wert County. Their children were John, Mary King Whitney Davis, Jesse, Josias, Philip and Susannah King Hartzog.
Mary's pension application as a widow of a War of 1812 veteran stated that Philip was buried in a small graveyard on the farm owned by Jeremiah Kalb. The graveyard has never been located and was probably destroyed by roads and development.
