At that time, he was single and was of medium height, medium build, and had light blue eyes and light brown hair. In the first World War, he was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Infantry, stationed in France. He received $600 mustering-out pay. After returning home, the Reinhart overseer of the mill required Richard to work for two years in Kings Mountain, NC.
Richard and Martha were married by Rev. E.G. Ross, a Baptist Minister. In 1930, he lived on Washington St. in Newberry, SC, and was a "smasher" at the cotton mill. By 1936, the family resided on Sinclair Ave., Whitmire, SC, and he worked at the Aragon-Baldwin Cotton Mills in Whitmire. He was a weaver and Martha was a spinner. He and Martha died at their Lake Murray cabin at "Morgan's Boat Landing," in Prosperity, SC, where they made a living selling fishing gear and other supplies.
