Elwood was the son of Cornelius Moses Compton and Ora Kathrine Johnson. He married Evelyn Thomas Gussler and they divorced. They had no children.

After high school, Elwood enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed on guard duty at the naval prison in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Following his tour of duty during World War II, he returned home and married Evelyn. They moved to the Panama Canal Zone where he drove the mules that guided the cargo and passenger ships through the canal. Always athletic, Elwood was the Brazos Brook Golf Club Champion twice. Considered an excellent golfer, he spent much of his free time on the Panama courses. After thirty years of civil service, he retired and remained in Panama until shortly after becoming ill. He moved to Bootswyn, PA, where his loving sister Eva took care of him until his passing. Elwood had a wonderful humorous personality, and is remembered by his friends and family as a great kidder.
