Thompson James Simpson, Sr., 74, a retired radar specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration who was active in Masonic and service groups, died of a heart attack Nov. 29 at his home in Falls Church. Mr. Simpson was born in New Orleans. He graduated from Tulane University and later earned a master's degree in physics at George Washington University. During World War II, he served in the old Army Air Forces and he was in the group that set up its first school for air traffic controllers. In 1950, Mr. Simpson moved to the Washington area and joined the old Civil Aeronautics Board, whose functions were taken over by the FAA after the latter agency was established in 1965. He retired from the FAA in 1973. Mr. Simpson was a member of the Macon Ware Masonic Lodge No. 192 and the Kena Temple of the Shrine. He also was a member of the Falls Church Rotary Club. His wife, Ethelda K. Simpson, died in 1982. Survivors include three children, Helen Simpson Roney of Alexandria, Thompson J. Simpson, Jr. of Sterling Park and Robert J.
