Hosea and his brother Orin were both residents of Hancock WI. Hosea enlisted with the Wisconsin Volunteers 18 November 1861. He was a fife major and served, as Private, in Co. E, 16th Reg. Infantry. Hosea was wounded at Shiloh, and discharged from service on 12 July 1865.
The 16th Regiment trained at Camp Randall in Madison Wisconsin. The 16th subsequently participated in major battles at Shiloh Tennessee and Corinth Mississippi in 1862; in the Atlantic campaign and March to the Sea in 1864; and in the Carolina campaign in 1865.
