Rod was one of the first DJ's for the fledgling WEEM radio station, located at Pendleton Heights High School. He was well-known in the Madison County area for his play-by-play announcing of high school ball games. Rod was a 1972 graduate of Pendleton Heights and a graduate of Ball State University.

He was honored in 1989 by the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscaster Association with its Marv Bates Award as the state's Top Sports Broadcaster. He was recipient of the IHSAA's Distinguished Media Service Award for District 4 in 1997-98. He served on WEEM, Pendleton Advisory Board.

He is survived by his wife, Christina, and three children.
