PENDLETON — Lewis E. Burke, 72, Pendleton, died June 17, 2009, at his home. Mr. Burke was a plumber in the maintenance department of Anderson Community Schools for 41 years. He retired in 1998.

He was born May 28, 1937, in Pendleton, the son of Gerald and Mary Armstrong Burke.

He was a 1956 graduate of Pendleton High School.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as a first sergeant after 37 years of service.

He was married to Judy Elsten Burke for 29 years. She survives him.

Mr. Burke was a member of American Legion Post No. 117 in Pendleton. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, fishing, camping, bowling and spending time with his family. His pride and joy was his red and silver GMC S-15 truck.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Liz Burke, Atlanta; a stepdaughter and her husband, Renee and Greg Miller, Noblesville; a stepson and his wife, Alan and Leslie Hazelwood, Cicero; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Burke, Arcadia; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Martha Burke, Pendleton; two sisters, Karen Gooding and husband, Dennis, Anderson, and Frances and Dennis Sizelove, Alexandria; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Mark Burke Jr., Eddie and Shawna Burke, Aaron and Jessica Burke, April Crider, Dawn and Nick Griffin, Rachel Burke, Whitney Cox, Dexter Montgomery, Gage Brooks, Celeste Brooks and Michael Cloud; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Perry Burke, in 2006.

Calling was Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Lahm Chapel, Pendleton. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel. The Rev. Gary Elsten will officiate. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Grove Lawn Cemetery, Pendleton.
