Arthur S. Saunders, 92, of Derry, NH, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, March 16, 2013, surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers, at Villa Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Manchester, NH.

Arthur grew up on a scenic farm in South Blue Hill, Maine, the son to Leon and Prudence Sylvester. He proudly graduated from George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, as well as Husson College, in Bangor, Maine. Arthur entered the United States Navy in 1939, where he served on a Minesweeper in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. After safely returning from war, Arthur married Annie (Johnson) Saunders, of Deer Isle, Maine, on March 8, 1946. Arthur worked in sales for the Beacon Milling Co. for over 20 years, living in Cayuga, NY, and Rutland, VT, before settling with his family in Derry, NH, in 1964. He then left the Beacon Milling Co. and continued his work in sales for Slawsby Insurance in Nashua, NH, until his retirement in 1985. Believing in service to the community, Arthur was a lifelong member of the Masons and the local Lions Clubs where he resided. He continued this service in his early years of retirement by transporting local youth as a bus driver for Pinkerton Academy and the Hampstead School District. His students still remember his quirky nicknames and clever sense of humor, but more importantly his kind demeanor. A devout fan of sports, Arthur spent many of his evenings and weekends yelling at the TV at his favorite Boston teams, especially "those gosh darn Red Sox!" He also enjoyed cars, gardening, and playing ball in the yard with his dogs. Above all, he cherished time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he nurtured with unconditional love and support. "Gramp" will be remembered by his family as the most compassionate man they ever knew and the reason his generation is known as the "Greatest."

Arthur will be laid to rest by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ann; two children, Debra (Saunders) and her husband, Rolland "Frenchy" Tremblay, of Derry, and James Saunders and his wife, Ginger, of Chester; 4 grandchildren, James Tremblay and his wife, Jessica, of Bedford, Jillian (Tremblay) and her husband, Michael Thiele, of Derry, Zachary Saunders, of Manchester, and Kate Saunders, of Chester; and two great-grandchildren, Alexa Wallace Tremblay and Jackson Saunders Tremblay, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Paul and Stephen Sylvester, both of Maine.
