Organized Crime Figure. Born in New York, Harry "Happy" Maione would cut his teeth on some of the most deadly mobsters in the area he was raised. He led the Ocean Hill Hooligans, an Italian street gang in the Ocean Hill, Brooklyn section of New York as a young man. This is also where he would meet his protégé Frank "The Dasher" Abbandando. By 1931 he was killing, Harry and Frank would help Abe "Kid Twist" Reles and Martin "Bugsy" Goldstein "rub out" the Shapiro Brothers, a rival gang. Once the Spapiro Brothers were gone, Harry, Frank, Reles, and Goldstein then banded together and created Brooklyn, Inc., the forerunner to Murder, Inc. Soon other murderers were to join, Harry "Pittsburgh Phil" Strauss, Emanuel "Mendy" Weiss, Albert "Tick Tock" Tannenbaum, Seymour "Blue Jaw" Magoon, Louis Capone, Charles "The Bug" Workman, Cooper McCue, and Vito "Socko" Gurino. Soon the group began accepting contracts from the National Crime Syndicate with the help of Syndicate Board Member Joe Adonis. The gang soon became the official murder-for-hire squad of the Syndicate, and was dubbed "Murder, Inc." by the press. Murder Inc was directed by Louis "Lepke" Buchalter (another member of the Syndicate board) and Albert "Mad Hatter" Anastasia. Starting in the 1930s New York District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey, waged war on Louis Buchalter. In turn Buchalter began to eliminate any witnesses that he thought Dewey could use. In May of 1937, one such target was rubbed out by Harry "Happy" Maione, Abbandando, and Strauss, he was Loan shark George "Whitey" Rudnick. In 1940 when Abe Reles became an informant for the State of New York, he fingered Harry "Happy" Maione and Abbandando in the horrific slaying of Rudnick. This information was enough for Harry "Happy" Maione to be sentenced to death for first-degree murder. Harry received his nickname "Happy" because he carried an eternal scowl. Harry also had a son, Albert Maione. who eventually became an associate with the Gambino crime family. Harry "Happy" Maione and Frank Abbandando were convicted of murder, they were executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing in February 19, 1942.
