Axtell was commissioned a major in the Morris County (NJ) militia, commanded by Jacob Ford in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. He also served in the State Troops.

He first married Mary Beach, and then Phoebe (Condict) Day.
He was the son of Henry and Jemima Leonard Axtell.
