From Civil War Military Records:

John Francis Hessenflow, age 13, of Gosport,Iowa nativity Iowa enlisted Aug 2 1862 into Co I 33rd Iowa Infantry as a drummer. Survived numerous battles, many in the state of Arkansas. Honorably discharged Jul 17 1865 after 3 years of arduous and dangerous service.

He was son of John S Hessenflow and Margaret Cooper Hessenflow.

His father, John S Hessenflow enlisted into same regiment and company the same day. He did not survive the war.
John S Hessenflow, age 42, of Gosport,IA nativity Indiana, enlisted same day into same company as Sgt. He was wounded at Battle of Helena,Arkansas Jul 4 1863. Taken by steamboat to Memphis,TN. Died of wounds Jul 16 1863. Buried Memphis National Cemetery. See his entries in FindaGrave. Has additional memorial in Gosport Cemetery.

John Francis Hessenflow died at the Sailers and Soldiers home at Monte Vista, Colorado.At the time of his death he was receiving pension of $18.00 per month. Until June of 1916 he received $13.50 per month.
An affidavit from his pension file says he had rheumatism of the heart (Probably means he had Rheumatic Fever - a serious consequence of Scarlet Fever). During the Civil War he was left in a convalescent camp at Little Rock Arkansas on 26 Oct 1863 for unknown period of time.

John Francis never married and never had children.
He lived in Iowa 1865-1870; Kansas 1870-1880; Colorado 1880-1912
