Actor. Born in Bethune, Colorado, after serving in the US Navy in World War II, he began performing in amateur theater productions and made his big screen debut in "The Guilt of Janet Ames" (1947). A veteran of many films, he had a close association with actor John Wayne appearing in his films such as "The Horse Soldiers" (1959), "The Alamo" (1960), "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) and "Cahill U.S. Marshal" (1973). For television, his credits include "Route 66," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams," and for his role of Uncle Jesse on "The Dukes of Hazzard." He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
