Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. He began his minor league career at age 16, and broke into the National League with 27 victories for the Boston Beaneaters in 1890. The ace of the Boston staff, Nichols won 30 or more games seven times and led the Beaneaters to five pennants. He remained with Boston until 1901, managed Kansas City in 1902 and 1903, then pitched for and managed the St. Louis Cardinals in 1904 and 1905. He ended his career with the Phillies in 1906. He won 360 major league games, the sixth highest total in history, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1949.
