Martin H. Carmody Council 389 was founded on January 8, 1899 through the efforts of a nucleus of six men: Patrick O'Brien, Charles Brown, Michael H. Ducey, Thomas A. McGee, Charles F. Norton, and Michael D. Ryan. When first established, the name was Grand Rapids Council 389 and it was one of the first four Councils to form the basis of Columbianism in Michigan. On February 7, 1951 the Council name was amended from Grand Rapids Council 389 to Martin H. Carmody Council 389. Martin H. Carmody was the fourth Grand Knight of the Council and the only Supreme Knight to have come from the State of Michigan. Over the years, the Knights of Columbus organization has grown to over 17,000 members in the State, and Council 389 remains the second oldest in Michigan. The Martin H. Carmody Council works closely with the Saint Jude Parish Grand Rapids, as well as supporting projects at St. Mary's in Grand Rapids, St. Andrews, Holy Spirit and Sacred Heart of Jesus parishes.
