Lula was born Waxahachie to Eloise Deloma Hill. She reported her father's name as John Hill on her application for a social security number, but nothing else is known of his identity. Her mother married Sam Westmoreland while Lula was a small child. in 1903 a family dispute between Sam Westmoreland and Eloise's brother Ellis Clardy resulted in a shooting in which Eloise was killed. In the aftermath of that event Lula and most of her siblings came to Oklahoma, settling in Hughes County.
Lula married Frank Bennett in 1910. They farmed and raised a family, settling in the Penn West addition of Holdenville in the 1920's.

All official records show her birth year as 1889, but by her age in the 1900 census, the earliest known document, her birth year would have been 1888.
