Alfred Barker was the son of Ira and Margaret (Stewart) Barker.

Barker served in the Civil War in Company D of the 11th Illinois. Barker was mustered out after three months, but in September 1862 he reenlisted as a second lieutenant in Company A of the 74th Illinois. His service ended with his resignation on March 9, 1863. He fought with his brother, Henry, who died on June 27, 1864 at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

Barker played for the Rockford Forest Cities baseball club before they were a professional team from 1868 until 1870. On June 1, 1871, after Rockford became a professional team in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, he played his only "major league" game, were he had 1 hit in 5 at bats. He later umpired 3 National League games in 1881, all as the home plate umpire.

He was married to Sarah (Converse) Barker.

He died on September 15, 1912 of stomach cancer.
