He was a Seven Rivers cowboy and a participant in the Lincoln County War on the Murphy-Dolan side. He was killed on the last day of the 3 day "Battle of Lincoln." He was originally buried in the post cemetery at Fort Stanton. Most of the post cemetery soldier burials were later relocated to Santa Fe National Cemetery. Many of the remaining civilian burials were not adequately documented and Beckwith's actual gravesite has been lost.
