Western Outlaw. Born in Bells Corners, near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in the late 1880s, together with partner John Sontag he formed the Evans-Sontag Gang and was its leader. Going to California, they proceeded to rob several Southern Pacific trains between 1889 and 1892. The outlaws evaded capture for some time until the killing of a member of a law posse outside Visalia, forced Evans with others to the Sierra Mountains. There at Stone Corral, they had a shoot-out with another posse resulting in the death of John Sontag and Evans being severely wounded and taken into custody. Convicted and sentenced to life in Folsom Prison, Evans escaped once and was paroled in 1911, after serving 17 years. He relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he lived until his death.
