Barrows attended Phillips Academy in Exeter, Massachusetts were his father worked.

He played for the Boston Tri-Mountains in the National Association of Base Ball Players from 1867 to 1870.

Played in 18 games for the Boston Red Stockings of the National Association in 1871. In his debut game on May 20, he had one hit in 5 at bats against the Philadelphia Athletics. Barrows had a .151 batting average with 11 RBI, and 13 hits in 86 at bats during the 1871 season.

In addition to his playing career, he umpired three National Association in 1872. He later played on an old-timers team in 1897 that included future Baseball Hall of Famers George Wright and Albert Spalding.
