Sheba came to us as a 1 year old. She was an outside dog until shortly after my husband's passing in 2005. I came home one night to find her standing in the driveway. I bought her inside for the night and she did so well in the house that I started bringing her in when I was home. In a few short weeks she was inside even when I was gone.
In June of this year (2006) we moved from the mountains to just outside of Gettysburg where she had a nice fenced in yard and didn't need to be tied out any more. She loved sitting on the porch and many days when the weather was nice she spent the day outside and would be sitting on the chair on the porch waiting to greet me when I came home. Sheba was my travelling companion and went everywhere with me except when I went to work. She loved to go for a ride in the car and just saying the words "Bye Byes" made her go wild with anticipation. She was my snuggle bunny at night and would many times lay with her head either on my chest or on the pillow beside mine with a leg resting on me. She always knew to head to the bedroom when I said "Let's go nighty night" She knew my night time routine and even if I didn't say "Let's go nighty night" - she would head to bed when she saw me brushing my teeth. She would get in the middle of the bed and spread out trying to take up the entire bed.
She was very smart and got into a lot of mischief! When she misbehaved I would make her lay on the floor and put her head down. Many times she would do that when she did something wrong so then I would have to go investigate to see what she did. She learned how to open the cupboard doors and was constantly getting in the cupboard to help herself to something to eat - especially after the vet said she was overweight and needed to lose 10 pounds. One day I left a closed jar of peanut butter on the table. When I came home she had gotten the jar and opened it without putting a mark on the jar or lid. Needless to say - the peanut butter jar was empty. I had to keep the outside door locked because she learned how to open it and go outside on her own.

Unfortunately she became very ill with kidney failure and I had to have her put to sleep tonight. It was the hardest and most heartbreaking thing I ever had to do other than watch my beloved husband suffer and then pass away. She was at the vets getting treatment when they called me at work to tell me there was no hope and she was starting to suffer. I left work and bought her home for a couple hours before taking her back for her final car ride. She was so happy to see me. We came home and I layed on the floor with her and held her till it was time to take her back. I kept telling her how much I loved her and to take good care of Daddy when she gets to Heaven. I held her head and gave her lots of kisses while the vet gave her the shot.
I will miss and love her always!

Thank you to wicki for sponsoring my Sheba Girl's page. That was so very kind and thoughtful of you. God Bless you!

UPDATE - 3-21-07 - I am convinced that Sheba was yet another death due to the tainted dog food that is in the news. She was very healthy and just suddenly went down hill fast. At the time the vet said she was very young for kidney disease & there had been no signs of it when I had her spayed approximately 9 months prior to her illness. We had run all the tests before having her spayed and nothing showed as being wrong and none of the blood test indicated a problem.
