He was born 23 Oct 1885 in Montour County, PA to Ludwig "Lewis" Christ and Helena Schneider, who emigrated from Germany in 1882. Though his parents and some siblings kept the original "Christ" spelling, Edwin and a few others adopted the "Crist" spelling, which survives to today. He is known in records as Edward and Edvin, and surnames are spelled as Chriss, Christ, Chrest, Krist, and Kriss.
He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Turbotville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania on 24 Jan 1886 and was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Trumbauersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania on 28 Oct 1905.
He was married to Emma Schuler Long on 23 Jul 1907 in Quakertown, Bucks County. From their union came the following children:
