A local elementary school is honoring a 6-year-old girl killed last week, in a car crash in New Bern.

Six-year-old Alanna Garris died in the crash on Brice's Creek Road. She was a first-grader at New Bern's Brinson Memorial Elementary. The school's principal, Todd Bradley said the news of Alanna's death affected everyone at the school.
ย
"It's impacted our students, anytime you lose a member of your family, it can be very devastating," said Bradley.

After speaking with Alanna's family, Bradley says the school has started a donation fund to help pay for her funeral services.

In addition to accepting donations, Bradley says the school's staff is planning several ways to honor Alanna's memory.

"We do plan on having a vigil for Alanna. We don't have that established yet. We're going to donate a page in the year book to her, we're going to plant a Japanese Maple Tree in her honor," said Bradley.

He says they are also planning a pink ribbon day for Alanna, to represent her caring personality and because it was her favorite color.ย

You can contribute to Alanna's memorial fund through Brinson Elementary School. Make checks out to Green Leaf Memorial Park. Her funeral will take place Tuesday.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting ush

Of quiet birds in circling flight.

I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there; I did not die.
