Former Bishop of the Diocese of Christchurch, Monsignor Barry Jones was born in Rangiora and was ordained priest in his native town by Bishop Brian Patrick Ashby on July 4, 1966 at Ss. Mary and Francis de Sales Church. Serving across Timaru North, Cathedral, Christchurch Hospital, Kumara, Akaroa, Sockburn, Te Rangimarie, Burnham, Riccarton and Greymouth, he was amongst others, vice rector of the Good Shepherd House. Elected coadjutor bishop of Christchurch by Pope Benedict XVI at 65 years of age, he received his episcopal consecration on October 4, 2006 from Bishop John Jerome Cunneen, assisted by Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo and Bishop John Basil Meeking. Succeeding Cunneen as bishop of Christchurch on May 4 of the following year, Jones loved classical music, gardening and mountain biking.

Leading his diocese through earthquakes which destroyed several parish churches and badly damaged his cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, which had still not reopened by the time of his death, Bishop Barry was in bad health in his last months due to several strokes. readmitted to Christchurch Hospital on Friday January 29, 2016, after suffering a heart attack, he passed away peacefully at on Saturday, February 17 at 3.30 am., aged 74. Laid out in state at the Carmelite monastery of 52 Halswell Road, Hoon Hay, and successively at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, requiem mass for Bishop Jones was held on Friday, February 19, at 1 pm., followed by interment at Bromley Cemetery.
