Born to noble parents in Cologne or nearby Lüftelberg in the then Holy Roman Empire, Johann Adam Schall von Bell joined the Society of Jesus in 1611 and after pursuing his education at the Gregorianum in Rome, left for China in 1618. Participating in modifying the Chinese calendar and compiling what is known as "Chongzhen Calendar", after the Qing dynasty came to power, he gained access to Emperor Shunzhi and became one of his trusted counsellors, being made a mandarin. He died at the age of 75, not after having faced various difficulties in his later years, which include the sentence of death, which would later be revoked.
