Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Cologne and Bishop of the Titular See of Corada, the fourth of six children, Msgr. Augustinus Frotz began an apprenticeship in a machine factory in 1917 after the end of the Catholic Volksschule. Graduating from the Collegium Josephinum of Münstereifel in 1924, on April 18 of that year he enrolled for theology at the University of Bonn. Frequenting the Collegio Germanicum in Rome, earning doctorates in philosophy and theology 1931, he was ordained priest on October 26, 1930.

Named chaplain of St. Stephan in Cologne-Lindenthal from 1931 and three years later, vicar of Cologne's Cathedral, he served as diocesan pastor for male youths. Appointed rector of the seminary of Cologne by the Archbishop, Cardinal Joseph Frings, on April 1, 1944, he lectured there the subjects of pastorality, sacraments, homiletics and moral theology.

Elected Auxiliary for the Metropolitan See of Cologne by Pope John XXIII, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Corada on October 7, 1962 from Cardinal Frings, assisted by Bishops Joseph Ferche and Wilhelm Cleven.

Retiring from office on May 30, 1983, Dr. Frotz remained an archbishop's deputy for the deacon's office.

It was he who back on on April 28, 1968, presided, in the presence of Cardinal Frings, the world's first ordination of married men to the permanent diaconate in Cologne's Cathedral.
