Roman Catholic Saint. Born on a farm near the town of Parzham in Bavaria, John Birndorfer showed indications of future sanctity from his early years through his modesty, devotion and love of solitude. Frequently journeying on foot in pilgrimage, he was was dedicated to fasting and prayer. Entering the Capuchin Order as a lay brother at the age of thirty one, receiving the religious name of Konrad, he made his solemn profession on October 4, 1852. Upon taking his vows, he was sent to the convent of St. Anne in the city of Altötting, known for the shrine dedicated to the Mother of Mercy. Assigned as porter of the shrine, which role he retained until his death, he soon became known for his work diligence and many were those was sought his advice and benefited from his charity in the forty years that followed. A man who loved silence in a special way, his spare moments during the day were spent in a nook near the door where it was possible for him to see and adore the Blessed Sacrament, while during the night he would deprive himself of several hours of sleep to devote the time to prayer. Generally believed to never taking rest but continually occupied himself in work and exercises of devotion, Brother Konrad died at the shrine at seventy five years of age. His heroic virtues and miracles performed led him to be beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1930. Four years later, the same Pope solemnly inscribed his name in the list of saints. His liturgical feast day is held on April 21.
