Former Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of München und Freising, and Bishop of the Titular See of Vicus Aterii, Monsignor Matthias Dionys Albert Paul Defregger, was born in Munich, Germany, on February 18, 1915, the son of Lieutenant Colonel Hermann Defregger, and grandson of the renowned Tyrolean painter, Franz of Defregger. He studied under the Jesuit Fathers at the Stella Matutina Lyceum in the Austrian Feldkirch, and after rendering military service during the Third Reich, was ordained to the priesthood at 34 years of age, on June 29, 1949, in Munich, by Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber in the Freisinger Mariendom.

Chaplain of the St. Joachim parish in Munich, from August 1, 1949, on September 1, 1953, Cardinal Joseph Wendel, Archbishop of München und Freising, named Defregger as his personal secretary. In this task, Defregger was involved in the preparation of the Eucharistic World Congress of 1960, which was held in Munich. During the episcopate of Cardinal Julius Döpfner, who succeeded Cardinal Wendel following his unexpected demise, Defregger became on January 1, 1962, Domkapitular of the Metropolitan Chapter and shortly afterwards later, on May 1, Generalvikar of the Archbishop of München und Freising.

A popular preacher, aged 53, Defregger was appointed Auxiliary of the Metropolitan See of München und Freising, by Pope Pope VI, on July 3, 1968, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Vicus Aterii, on the following September 14, from Cardinal Julius August Döpfner, assisted by Bishops Johannes Baptist Neuhäusler and Antonius Hofmann.

The First Bischofsvikar for the newly created South Region of the Archdiocese, retiring from office at the canonical age of 75 years, a brain haemorrhage extinguished his life on July 23, 1995, at 80 years of age, in Pöcking, near the Starnberg Lake, where he lived in retirement. An honouring funeral, celebrated on the following July 29, 1995, in Amlach, saw the participation among others of Cardinals Friedrich Wetter and Joseph Ratzinger, Archbishops Alois Wagner and Georg Eder, and Bishop Franz Xavier Schwarzenböck.

According to his wishes, Bishop Matthias Defregger was interred in Amlach, East Tyrol, not far from Lienz.
