Serving as chaplain in Limburg between 1969 and 1973, on May 5, 1978, at the early age of 39, Pünder was elected as the First Bishop of the newly erected See of Coroatá, Maranho, Brazil, by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following July 29, from Dom Acácio Rodrigues Alves, assisted by Archbishop João Batista da Mota e Albuquerque and Bishop Gerhard Pieschl.
Dom Reinaldo passed away in Coroatá, on Sunday, January 16, 2011, at 4.15 am., after 32 years in office, after suffering from pancreatic cancer for over two years. He was succeeded by his coadjutor, Dom Sebastião Bandeira Coelho, who assisted him in office since January 2010, due to his illness.
The Bishop's body was laid out in state at the Catedral Nossa Senhora da Piedade of Coroatá, where funeral Mass was also celebrated. The Bishop was later interred in the cloister gardens which surround the named cathedral.
