Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Laruns, Pierre Eyt was the eldest child of a hotelier who lost his mother when still aged four. Entering seminary in Bayonne, he was ordained priest there on June 29, 1961, after serving in the armed forces between 1956 and 1959, becoming a sub-lieutenant of the Chasseurs Alpins while in Algeria. Professor and later rector at the Catholic Institute of Toulouse, he was named rector of the Catholic Institute of Paris in 1981 and president of the Union of Catholic Institutes of Higher Education of France the following year. Founding the Jewish Studies Center of Jerusalem upon the request of the Holy See in 1984, he was appointed coadjutor Archbishop of Bordeaux by Pope John Paul II, receiving his consecration on September 28, 1986, from Archbishop Marius Maziers. Upon the latter's retirement, Eyt succeeded to the Metropolitan See of Bordeaux on May 31, 1989. Pope John Paul created him cardinal in the consistory of November 26, 1994, with the title of Ss. Trinità al Monte Pincio. Appointed knight of the Légion d'honneur in 1995, Eyt died following a long battle with cancer in Bordeaux.
