Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in India, Louis-François de Bausset-Roquefort was raised in France, where he underwent studies at the La Flèche College and the Seminary of Saint Sulpice in the capital. Ordained priest in 1773, two years later he was appointed vicar general of the archdiocese of Aix and later of Digne in 1778. Elected bishop of the diocese of Alès at the early age of thirty five, he received his episcopal consecration in Issy, near Paris, on July 18, 1784. Declining an appointment to the bishopric see of Grenoble in 1788, upon his refusal in accepting the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in 1791, he left for Switzerland, returning back the following year, only to be imprisoned after the fall of Maximilien de Robespierre. Upon his release, he went to live in Villemoison. Resigning the pastoral government of his see on September 22, 1801, the diocese was suppressed on the following November 29. As poor health prevented him from being appointed to one of the newly established dioceses, in the years which followed he went on to serve as canon of Saint-Denis in Paris, member of the council of the Université de France, president of the council of public instruction and peer of the French Kingdom. Named member of the Académie Française in 1816, Pope Pius VII created him cardinal priest priest in the consistory of July 28, 1817, but never received the red hat and his cardinalitial title. Appointed Minister of State in 1821, the Cardinal was a man of letters, authoring through the years a number of publications.
