A native of Paris, France, Msgr. Michel Callens M.Afr., was ordained to the priesthood through the Missionaries of Africa on May 29, 1943. Working as a missionary in Tunisia, serving among others as treasurer at Thibar and Carthage, then at the Institut des belles lettres arabes (IBLA), he also lectured at Medjez-El-Bab and Médenine.

Aiming at a better knowledge of Tunisia and Islam, special care was given to the mixed households, privileged places of religious dialogue, on January 9, 1965, he was named Prelate of Tunis and Archbishop of the Titular See of Moxori by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration on the following April 11, from Cardinal Léon-Etienne Duval, assisted by Archbishops Paul Perrin and Emile-Joseph Socquet M.Afr.

Visiting all of his parishes three times a year, Monsignor Callens died of a violent type of malaria, while still in office, on August 19, 1990, aged 72.
