Former Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Brother Philippe Mathieu Branset was born in Gachat in the French department of Loire and entered the Lasallian novitiate in 1809 at Lyon. Elected superior general in 1838, he served in this position for 36 years until his death, becoming a well known figure throughout France for his educational development.

Organizing the first night schools in 1830, as of 1835 he started directing the municipal schools of Reims. Following his election to the generalate, he played a major role in the spread of education in the nineteenth century, giving a decisive impetus to its expansion. Developing the institute from 313 houses in 1838 to 1149 by 1874 and 2317 to 10,235 Brothers across Belgium, India, America and the Levant, he was the founder of the boarding school Passy. Providing his Brothers to aid physicians during the Siege of Paris, he was decorated with the Légion d'honneur on February 7, 1871. He furthermore authored various textbooks for students covering all disciplines which were soon introduced in various countries.
