Born in Chambretaud, France, Msgr. Jules-Alphonse Cousin was ordained priest through the La Société des Missions Etrangères on December 23, 1865, and moving to Japan to initiate his missionary activities, went on the become apostolic vicar of Southern Japan, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Acmonia on September 21, 1885 from Bishop Pierre-Marie Osouf MEP. When the vicariate was raised to the diocese of Nagasaki by the Holy See on June 15, 1891, Cousin became its first ordinary bishop. He died in office in 1911.
