Aged 63, he was appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Reims, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Suas, on January 26, 1992, in Charleville, from Archbishop Jean Marie Julien Balland, assisted by Archbishops Jacques-Eugène-Louis Ménager and André Jean René Lacrampe, Ist. del Prado.
During his episcopate, Msgr. Gourguillon served as vicar general of the archdiocese and coordinator of the industrial zone of Ardennes, as auxiliary to Archbishops Balland, Defois and Jordan, and twice as apostolic administrator of the vacant see.
The Bishop resigned his office at the age of 74, on January 21, 2003, and died on Friday, November 23, 2007, aged 79.
