Roman Catholic Cardinal. French born Gérard's date of birth remains unknown as remains his exact birthplace. Sometimes referred to as Girard François, he entered the Cistercian Order, being, in the years which followed, elected as the eighth abbot of the Cistercian abbey of Pontigny. Pope Innocent III created him cardinal deacon of San Nicola in Carcere Tulliano in the consistory of December 1198. Opting for the order of cardinal priests and the title of San Marcello, together with Cardinal Ugolino dei Conti di Segni, he was charged with the judgment of a very delicate controversy in 1200. It was around the same year that Dom Gérard died. His exact burial location also remains unknown.
