Born Peter Huppert in Germany, as the son of a miner, aged eighteen he emigrated to America, probably to avoid military service. He attended Saint Lawrence's College at Calvary, with the intention of joining the Dominicans, but influenced by his friend, future Capuchin Anthony Adams, he asked to be admitted to the scholasticate.

There, he received the religious name of Thomas, in deference to his previous desire to be a Dominican. He entered the Capuchin novitiate in Detroit, and following his ordination to the priesthood, Thomas was assigned to St. Joseph's church in Appleton, but was soon transferred to St. Fidelis's Friary in New York City, where he assisted at St. John the Baptist's church which was attached to the friary.

A greatly appreciated confessor, what had previously been taught to be a weak stomach was finally diagnosed as stomach cancer. It was hoped that a trip to his native land might help improve his condition, but he returned to the Province after two months, resigned to his impending death.

On his return, he celebrated Mass for the last time, was given sacraments, and then was admitted to St. Francis's Hospital, where he edified all by his cheerfulness, appreciation of the smallest service done for him and his sincere piety. He passed peacefully away on January 12, 1898, aged 33, after 9 years of religious life and 2 of priesthood.
