Born in Germany, Joseph Henkel entered the Capuchin Order just then years after Bonaventure Frey and Francis Haas established themselves at Mt. Calvary. Known by his religious name of Hieronymus, following his priesthood ordination he was assigned to St. Fidelis's Friary in New York City, which had been established just a year before.

For most of the last 32 years of his life, Friar Jerome served as local minister in various friaries, including St. Francis in Milwaukee, St. Bonaventure's in Detroit, Our Lady of Sorrows in New York, Holy Cross in Wauwatosa, and St. Elizabeth's in Milwaukee. He was very instrumental in bringing non-practicing Catholics back to their faith. Jerome entered hospital with a growth in his stomach for which doctors could do nothing, eventually leading to his demise on January 24, 1917, aged 66, after 49 years of religious life and 43 of priesthood.
