Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Sendai, Peter Tatsuo Doi came from an old samurai family. Baptized a Roman Catholic at the age of ten, he successively entered seminary in his native city. Pursuing his studies at the De Propaganda Fide Athenaeum in Rome, he was ordained priest in Sendai in May 1921, where he rendered his services until 1934, when he was named secretary to the Apostolic Delegate of Japan. At the age of forty four, Doi was appointed archbishop of the metropolitan see of Tokyo, receiving his consecration on February 13, 1938. Leading his see during the difficult period of the Second World War, acting among others as director of the National Catholic Central Committee, Pope John XXIII created him cardinal with the title of S. Antonio in via Merulana in 1960, becoming thus the first Japanese to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. Doi died of pneumonia while still in office and was interred in the Catholic Cemetery of Fuchu in Tokyo.
