Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Darjeeling, Lawrence Trevor Picachy joined the Society of Jesus in 1934 and was ordained priest in November 1947, after pursuing his studies in Dajeerling, Hazaribagali, Shembaganur, Calcutta and Kurslong. Rector of Saint Francis Xavier's College of Calcutta between 1950 and 1960, he was appointed as the first bishop of the newly erected diocese of Jamshedpur in 1962, receiving his episcopal consecration in Golmuri on September 9 that year. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Calcutta on May 29, 1969, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest with the title of Sacro Cuore di Maria in the consistory of May 24, 1976. To this day he remains the only Calcutta ordinary to be elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals. Elected president of the Episcopal Conference of India that same year, Picachy resigned from office due to ill health in 1986, passing away following a lengthy illness in 1992. He was laid to rest alongside his Jesuit brethren in their Dhyan Ashram fifteen kilometers outside Calcutta.
