Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a Muslim family in Godean, Justinus Darmojuwono converted to Catholicism in 1932. Entering the Major Seminary of Jogiakarta, he pursued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained priest in May 1947. Joining briefly the teaching staff of the Minor Seminary of Semarang, he served as vicar general of the archdiocese of Semerang, then guided by Msgr. Albertus Soegijapranata, becoming vicar capitular upon his death and eventually his successor on December 10, 1963. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 26, 1967, with the title of Ss.mi Nomi di Gesù e Maria in via Lata, becoming thus the first Indonesian Cardinal. Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Indonesia since 1964, he was elected president of the General Conference of Ordinaries of Indonesia that same of his cardinalitial elevation. Retiring from the pastoral government of his see in 1981 and from the military ordinariate two years later, he spent his last years as a parish priest of the then newly erected parish of Santa Maria Fatima in Banyumanik, Semarang. Upon his death, he was laid to rest at the Muntilan Kerkhoff, near the vault which houses the remains of Father Sandjaja, shot along with a Jesuit student in the village of Kembaran, near Muntilan, in 1948, when Dutch soldiers attacked Semarang who is recognized as a martyr of the Roman Catholic Church in Indonesia.
