Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Saint-Frédéric, municipality of La Beauce, Québec, Louis-Albert Vachon received his education at the minor and grand seminaries of Québec, followed by the University of Laval and the Pontifical Angelicum Athenaeum in Rome. Ordained priest in June 1938, he lectured philosophy and later theology at the named University of Laval, of which he became vice rector and ultimately rector in 1960. Rector of the Grand Seminary of Québec between 1955 and 1958, he served as superior general of the Seminary of Québec from 1960 until 1977 and vicar general of the archdiocese of Québec from 1960 till 1981. Appointed auxiliary for the see of Québec, Vachon received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Mesarfelta on May 14, 1977. Promoted to the metropolitan and primatial see of Québec on March 20, 1981, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest with the title of San Paolo della Croce a Corviale in the consistory of May 25, 1985. Companion of the Order of Canada and officer of the National Order of Québec, through the years Vachon received eleven honorary doctorate degrees from universities worldwide. Retiring from office in 1990, ill health forced him to retire in a home for elderly carrying his name in Québec where he passed peacefully away in his sleep.
