Former Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Rimouski, Monsignor Pierre-André Fournier was born to Joseph-Eudore Fournier and Jeannette Marquis in Plessisville, Quebec, the third of their nine children. Frequenting the Collège Saint-Édouard and the Collège de Lévis before entering the Grand Seminary of Quebec in 1963, he earned a licentiate in theology from Université Laval. Ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Maurice Roy on June 10, 1967, he furthered his studies in English in the United States, after which he earned a master's degree in pastoral studies from Université de Sherbrooke.

Performing successively pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Quebec, serving as parish priest of Saint-Roch between 1983 and 1995, member of the Social Affairs Committee of the Assembly of Quebec Catholic Bishops from 1987 until 1993, and parish administrator of Saint-Pascal-de-Maizerets from 1995 until 199, between 1998 and 2003, he served as parish priest of Notre-Dame-de-Foy, Saint-Denys, Sainte-Geneviève, and Saint-Mathieu. Appointed pastoral director and episcopal vicar of the Quebec Archdiocese in August 2003, Fournier was appointed Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Quebec by Pope John Paul II, receiving his episcopal consecration on April 10, 2005, from Cardinal Marc Ouellet PSS., assisted by Bishops Jean-Pierre Blais and Eugène Tremblay.

Named Archbishop of Rimouski by Pope Benedict XVI on July 3, 2008, he was installed as such on the following September 28, received the pallium from the named Pontiff on June 29 of the following year.

Elected president of the Assembly of Quebec Catholic Bishops in 2011, Msgr. Fournier passed unexpectedly away of sudden cardiac related complications, having underwent bypass surgery in mid-December, at the Hôpital Régional de Rimouski on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 12.30 pm., aged 71.

Laid out in state at the Grand Salon of the Archbishopric of Rimouski on the following Friday and Saturday, on Sunday his body was transported to the Saint-Robert-Bellarmin Church, where Requiem Mass, celebrated by Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix ISPX was held at 14.30 hrs., followed by interment at the Jardins Commémoratifs Saint-Germain of Rimouski.
