Born in Baie-des-Sables, Father Augustin Gagnon was ordained priest on November 24, 1883. Curate of Port-Daniel and successively of Saint-Paul-de-la-Croix, he lectured literature at the Antigonish College, Nova Scotia, and moving to the United States, served as almoner of the Saint Gabriel Hospital of Bryan, Texas, and curate of Solon-Spring, Wisconsin. Constructing churches across Gordon, Bennette, Trego and South Range, he succumbed to a lengthy illness in Campbellton, New Brunswick, assisted by Father Georges-Arthur Melançon, future Bishop of Chicoutimi.
