The son of an Irishman, Monsignor Thomas Cooke was ordained priest on September 11, 1814 and elected first ordinary of the see of Trois Rivières at sixty years of age in 1852, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 18 that year from Archbishop Pierre-Flavien Turgeon. Endless toil, continual difficulties and particularly the divisions among clergy and faithful, undermined the bishop's health. Increasingly crippled by rheumatism and weakened by heart disease and leg pains, Bishop Cooke gave Father Louis-François Laflèche full authority to clear up the financial situation of the diocese and in 1867, made him his coadjutor cum futura successione. He spent his remaining months in increasing seclusion, giving himself to meditation and devotions to the Virgin and Saint Joseph.
