He began his novitiate with the Redemptorist Fathers in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and completed his studies in theology and philosophy in Waterford and Meadowvale, Ontario, between 1948 and 1955. Ordained to the priesthood on July 7, 1954, by Bishop Isidore Borecky, his first major assignment was as a Parish Priest in Roblin between 1955 and 1967, where he also taught at Saint Vladimir's College. He subsequently served in Winnipeg from 1967 till 1971, Saskatoon between 1972 and 1981, and Yorkton and district from 1981 till 1984, with a sabbatical between 1971 and 1972, that allowed him to study pastoral counseling at Saint Paul's University in Ottawa. From 1983 till 1992, he served as Provincial Superior for the Redemptorists' Yorkton Province.
In December 1992, he was appointed Archbishop of the Archeparchy of Winnipeg, becoming ipso facto Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan of Canada. He received his episcopal consecration on March 9, 1993, from Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk C.SS.R., assisted by Archbishop Stephen Sulyk and Bishop Myron Michael Daciuk OSBM.
Archbishop Bzdel retired from office on January 9, 2006, and was succeeded by Archbishop Lawrence Daniel Huculak OSBM. He passed away late in the evening of Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at his residence in Winnipeg, aged 81.
Funeral services were held in Winnipeg beginning on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 7.00 pm., at Sts. Vladimir & Olga Cathedral, with Hierarchical Parastas. Services continued on Thursday, April 12, at 10.00 am., at St. Joseph's Church, with the Divine Liturgy and concluding rites, followed by burial at Holy Family Cemetery.
