Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, Jan Blaha was originally a chemist, being later ordained to the priesthood at the age of 29, on July 12, 1967 by Archbishop Josef Stimpfle in Augsburg, Germany. Three months later, on October 28, Blaha was secretly consecrated bishop by Msgr. Peter Dubovský SJ., because of the persecution on the Catholic Church brought on by the Communist Government of Czechoslovakia. The following day, Blaha consecrated to the episcopate, Felix Maria Davídek. For years Blaha taught clandestinely moral theology. After the revolution, he strove unsuccessfully for the Vatican adoption of hidden structures of the Church. He was offered the Bishopric of Litoměřice, which he did not accept. From 1999 till the end of his life, he worked in the parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary in Brno as parochial vicar. He died after a severe illness at the Hospice of St. Elizabeth in Brno on Thursday, December 13, 2012, aged 74. Funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul in Brno on Thursday, December 20, followed by interment at the local cemetery.
