Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Geneva, Charles Journet entered seminary in Fribourg where he was ordained priest in July 1917. Longtime faculty member of the named seminary, Journet's name soon rose to one of the world's most renowned theologians, leaving an imprint during the Second Vatican Council. Although he only took part in the latter's last session, he held a strong influence on 'Dignitatis Humanae' and 'Nostra Aetate' declarations. Pope Pope VI created him cardinal with the deaconry of Santa Maria in Portico Campitelli in February 1965. Founder of the 'Nova et Vetera' theological journal, Journet was a close friend of fellow theologian Jacques Maritain. Authoring several works, one of his most famous titles remains "The Church of the Word Incarnate". He died in Fribourg and was laid to rest among the Carthusian monks in their Valsainte Charterhouse cemetery.
